Mathematics is everywhere. It runs through most aspects of our everyday lives and underpins many of the academic subjects studied at school. It is essential, therefore, that we reach everyone in our delivery of the subject affording each individual the opportunity for enjoyment and success.

We encourage pupils to learn how to use Mathematics not only for practical or academic purposes, but also to develop an appreciation of the beauty of logic and symmetry and the pleasure of problem solving.

The skills gained in studying Mathematics can be applied in a multitude of other areas, ranging from sociology and medicine, to economics and architecture. The training of the mind that the subject encourages is particularly sought after by companies in the market place.

Within the Mathematics department, we are keen to promote enjoyment and enthusiasm in Mathematics. We enter our more able students into the UKMT Individual and Team Maths Challenges. These give pupils the opportunity to compete against other schools in the region.

Enrichment is provided for all students through after-school activities, such as the Challenge club and Statistics club, and puzzle challenge days and inter-house competitions.

Additional Resources

We offer a continuous programme of support for all students by way of weekly after school clinics for all ages from Year 7 through to Sixth Form. Students are also given their own personal login for the MyMaths website to allow for independent learning at home.

In their first year in the Senior School, every pupil is placed in a set according to their needs and ability. A caring environment, with flexible setting, ensures that our pupils can build up confidence and become encouraged by their success.

All pupils study Mathematics to Year 11 and follow either the Higher or Foundation tier Edexcel iGCSE course.

We have a select few students each year who sit the Statistics GCSE and Additional Mathematics qualification.  These are both invite only and studied as an after-school club.

A Level

In the Sixth Form, Mathematics is a popular choice allowing students to study Pure Mathematics, Mechanics and Statistics.  We also offer Further Mathematics; a demanding yet popular choice which counts as an additional A Level.

Through the study of Mathematics, students learn how to engage with more complex and abstract ideas, honing their problem solving skills which in turn develops the ability and confidence to adapt and approach new types of problems.
